Turning VW away form the Darkside

Turning VW away form the Darkside

A s you know, I am a fervent greenie. I have spent many years working with ‘Friends of the Earth’ so it may a bit strange to hear me talking about another environmental campaigning organisation; Greenpeace.

I know we are all on the same team and are working towards the same ends so I really like to see them doing well. On thing they really do well is their online viral campaigning.

Their latest campaign sees them targeting the car manufacturer ‘Volkswagen’. Here is how they describe it.

A few moments ago we launched a new global campaign to change Volkswagen by turning them away from the Dark Side, and we need your help. Despite the green image it likes to portray, VW is at the heart of a group of companies lobbying against new laws which we need to cut CO2 emissions, reduce our oil use and protect places like the Arctic from climate change. Only a rebellion can stop them – a mass of people from all across the globe –demanding that they change. We need you to be part of that rebellion.

As you can tell from that quote they are using ‘VW’s latest advertising campaign against them. In their advert they show a young child using some Jedi powers to get the lights of the car to come on. Greenpeace has turned this on their heads by creating a great advert of their own showing a strong Rebellion rising up against VW to try and get them to change their ways.

The real hook of this is the social media and gameification element of it all. Once you sign up you are awarded Star Wars items and status for referring friends and talking about it.

This is partly the reason why I am talking about their campaign on my blog. So have a look at the link below and explore the site. Also, while you are getting involved and enjoying the videos but throughout all this don’t forget the serious message that is trying to be put across.

May the force be with us, all of us.
